I hope you’ve had an enjoyable summer so far. This time of year offers a welcome pause to recharge and spend time with family and friends. Wherever you are, we hope you’re finding moments to unwind and enjoy the season.
Markets continue to reach new highs. This is a reminder that whilst the direction may be positive now, long-term success comes from staying calm in both good times and bad. As we often say, patience and a clear plan will always beat short-term noise.
Thank you for your support
I wanted to thank you for the many messages of care and support we received following the news that Helen passed away last month. Your kindness really means a lot to us and shows how fortunate we are to work with the people we do. Our team have also been incredible in rallying round, stepping up, and making sure everything continues to run smoothly.
Reflecting on time
Helen’s passing has naturally made me very reflective, and it reminded me of a video called “The Time You Have (in Jelly Beans)” that visualises our lifetime using 28,835 jelly beans – one for each day of an average American life span (though UK life expectancy is actually higher, so we might have a few more beans).
Recognising how precious time is as a resource can be difficult. After all, time is not something we see or consume like jelly beans. Using one jelly bean to represent each day of a typical person’s life, narrator Ze Frank demonstrates visually the treasure of every day of our lives.
It’s a powerful reminder of how precious our own time really is, and why it’s so important to be intentional about how we use it. It puts those final beans into sharp focus.
You will have heard us use the phrase “living life on purpose” – it’s a core part of Emery Little’s ethos on financial planning and not taking time for granted. The money is important, but it’s simply the tool or engine that enables you to live the life you want.
Summer intern
We’re delighted to have Nataliia, a summer intern from Ukraine who is studying Economics and Mathematics at Bath University, working with us until the end of September. Her story of adapting to life in the UK after leaving Ukraine when the war began is inspiring, and she’s already bringing valuable contributions and fresh energy to our team. You can read more about her journey here: A life changing move from Ukraine to the UK: Nataliia’s story.
As we move towards autumn, if you have any questions or would like to discuss your financial planning – or if you know someone who might benefit from our approach – please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
